The Fortune Feed: Wallabies Fail To Tame Lions in Brisbane

Here’s your Wallabies v Lions first test in Brisbane ‘Fortune Feed’ special. Where our Aussie men were unfortunately defeated 27 to 19 in the opening game of the series. Your mates at Joe Fortune have brought you a quick review of the game which was played under a sky full of stars. Nearly 53,000 fans packed out Suncorp Stadium safe in the knowledge that video replays only focused on the rugby and there was little chance of any of them being caught on Kiss Cam… unlike the CEO of Astronomer!

Lions Roar in Brisbane

The Lions came out roaring and put on a dominant first half display which could and should have seen them have a bigger lead than 24-5 early in the second half. Off the back of five wins from five games in the tour so far, an impressive British and Irish Lions side were strong in attack and solid in defence to hold off a spirited Aussie side in Brisbane.

On an evening where video replays and the Test Match Official (TMO) were heavily used to check for tries and infringements, Lions skipper Maro Itoje was ‘delighted’ with the result but admitted his side can and will need to improve ahead of the second test at the MCG.

Lynagh 2.0

Tom Lynagh, son of Wallabies’ legend Michael, got called up into the side after a late injury to Noah Lolesio. Lynagh made his first appearance for the Aussie men’s side as five-eight and left a huge impression on debut that he is very much a rising star and can handle the big occasions.  Safe to say he is now well and truly following in the footsteps of his father who played 72 Tests for the Wallabies including winning the 1991 World Cup.

Wallabies Have Hope

Despite conceding early in the second half the Wallabies showed enormous bravery and played some bloody good rugby in the third quarter which, without a contentious TMO decision against former NRL star Joseph Suaalii, could have seen the game be much closer. Whilst both sides scored three tries each the result was never in doubt but with scope to improve ahead of the next match don’t write off the Wallabies just yet. Coach Joe Schmidt admitted that his team has plenty to work on to get level in the series but are still very much in the contest.

A vintage gold television displays the final rugby match score: Wallabies 19 and British & Irish Lions 27. A Wallabies rugby ball rests on an Australian flag on the left, and a British & Irish Lions rugby ball sits on a red Lions flag on the right. Bold white text as the heading reads “MATCH STATS,” all set on a bright green background.
