How Baccarat Works
The point of Baccarat is to bet on whose hand will be the closest to 9. You can choose between the Player, Banker, or a Tie.
Unlike most card games where you always hope your own hand is the best one, with online Baccarat it doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is who you bet on to win, whether it was you or not.
On the online Baccarat table, you’ll see 3 betting areas next to the Player positions. That’s where you choose who to bet on.
You place your bet and receive 2 cards. The totals are added up. If either you or the Banker has a hand that sums to 8 or 9, that person wins automatically (called a “Natural”). If not, then you have to draw more cards based on what the total was (I’ll explain this in the next section).
If you both have the same total, it’s a Tie. Otherwise, the person whose total is closest to 9 after drawing another card is the winner.
Baccarat Rules
Considering the aim of the game, Baccarat for real money is pretty easy. But there are a few key rules from an online Baccarat guide that you need to know about.
Let’s go over the value of the cards:
- Ace: 1
- 2-9: their number value
- 10, J, Q, K: 0
Once you get your 2 cards, you add them up to see your total. But… let’s say someone’s total ends up being a double-digit number, like 13 (6+7). In this case, you drop the first digit. So now their total is 3.
Unless either of you reached a “Natural”, or got an 8 or a 9 right away, a third card may be drawn. Keep in mind the cards are drawn automatically. You don’t make the action yourself. But it’s nice to know what’s going on.
These are the scenarios when a third card is drawn:
- The Player has 5 or less. Then the third card is dealt to the Player.
- The Player has a total of 6 or 7. Then the third card is dealt to the Banker.
- The Player didn’t draw a third card, and the Banker has 5 or less. Then the Banker gets another card.
- If the Banker has a 6 or a 7 and the Player did not take a third card, then the Banker “Stays” (does not take a third card).
Then, if the Player got a third card, the Banker has one more opportunity to draw based on their hand. The total after that is the final total. Then you add up the sum (drop the first number if it’s a double-digit) and see who is closest to 9.
Player Vs. Banker Vs. Tie
No online casino Baccarat guide is complete without explaining when to make the bets, and how much you can get from them. It’s like this.
The bet with the lowest house edge is on the Banker at 1.4%. If you win on a bet on the Banker, there’s a 5% commission taken with the Payout. This is your strongest, most reliable bet.
Next best is a Player bet. The house edge is 1.29%. Finally, a bet on a Tie has the highest house edge at 15.75%.
Because of the high house edge, betting on a “Tie” can go by the slang, “sucker bet”. It’s true that your chances are skinny. But if you’re feeling risque and you’re looking to win more, betting on a Tie offers the highest payout.
These are the Payouts for teach type of bet:
